The Coast With The Most
With the eastern side of Barbados now a prime location for real estate, the latest luxury development from Crane Resorts is proving a hit with beachfront devotees Laura Henderson reports.
The oldest hotel on the island, The Crane first opened its doors in the 1800s to cater for visiting merchants and plantation owners attracted by the cool breezes, temperate climate and recuperative sea bathing found in the easterly part of the island.
In the 1970s celebrated theatre set designer Oliver Messel revamped the main building, but it’s the more recent redo that has taken the resort into prime time, drawing a cosmopolitan clientele to the “best beach location” on the island. Indeed the soft powder sand and Atlantic surf had such a “hypnotic effect” on Canadian businessman Paul Doyle, he decided to purchase and develop the then 18-room property in 1988. Over two decades and on the finished results merits the wait: a 252 room four-diamond resort meshing both the original hotel building as well as new suites, with four award-winning restaurants, a premium array of leisure facilities, retail village, spa and more.
Success has brought with it increased demand for a comparable bespoke offering with Doyle now turning his attention to the creation of a new residential community – Beach Houses. He explains: “Crane Resorts has always identified with second home owners who truly want to ‘get away from it all”. We’ve been fortunate enough to acquire a magnificent site overlooking Skeete’s Bay and Culpepper Island, the only parcel of land available for development on the East Coast, just outside Barbados’ National Park. Now we’ve got the project conceptualised and designed – we can offer that ‘Grenadines’ type of seclusion to buyers right here in Barbados.”
One striking difference between Beach Houses and The Crane’s portfolio of turnkey apartments and townhouses lies in the architecture; the latter more traditional colonial in feel in contrast to Beach Houses contemporary design aesthetic with its low density build of just 62 two and three-bedroom freestanding residences and a small boutique hotel stretching over a prime 50-acre hilltop site.
Individual residences are generously scaled, sitting on approximately 6,000 square feet of land. Accent features include floor-to-ceiling windows, infinity edge private pools with hot tubs, private patios offering a “no tans-lines” level of privacy, together with outdoor showers, hammocks, BBQs grills and even built-in owner’s storage. On completion, the community will boast 2 fine dining restaurants, a dramatic rooftop bar and state-of-the-art wellness centre with full-service day spa.
Adds Doyle: “Beach Houses will afford the same ownership options as The Crane, complete with the attendant flexibility and security, with the possibility of selecting the time of years and even the amount of time spent from two weeks each year, to a quarter share, through to whole ownership. Owners receive unprecedented benefits, including a rental pool option with turn-key services that include property taxes, utilities, interior maintenance and daily maid service plus all the amenities and services of a 5-star resort.”
He reflects: “Barbados offers the best of both worlds: it is laid back but sophisticated; a tropical paradise, but with amenities and good infrastructure; far from the madding crowd, but with plenty of direct daily flights to wherever you need to go. Ownership at Beach Houses that same degree of flexibility: a home-away-from-home tailored to your needs. It’s custom Caribbean.”
